Bajo las Raíces

A dark fantasy 2D action platformer in pixel art. Aren, a forest ranger, is shipwrecked on an island that appears on no map and falls among the roots of a giant oak. There is no way back: the only way is down.

The game

What the island keeps underground

Beneath the oak lies a wild world of roots, caves and breathing fungi. Further down waits the Dungeon: ten floors of stone, iron and bone, guarded by an army of skeletons that follows orders no one remembers giving.

Every floor has its guardian, and every guardian a legendary weapon. They let Aren keep going down, but each one taken wakes something beneath the island. At the bottom, Aren will have to choose.

  • Complete story mode: 60 levels and 13 bosses
  • Two playable endings, depending on your choice
  • Sword, bow, wind magic, staves with spells and alchemy
  • Notes and a journal that tell what happened on the island

Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit

  1. Before extracting: right-click the .zip → Properties → tick “Unblock” → OK.
  2. Right-click the .zip → “Extract All…”. Don’t open it from inside the .zip.
  3. Open BajoLasRaices.exe in the extracted folder.
Windows won’t let you open it?

The game is not digitally signed yet, so Windows may distrust it. It is a false alarm.

  • If “Windows protected your PC” appears, click “More info” → “Run anyway”.
  • If the antivirus blocks or deletes it: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history → open the BajoLasRaices.exe entry → Actions → “Allow on device”. If the .exe was deleted, extract the .zip again.

Linux

64-bit, with glibc 2.38 or newer (Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 39, Debian 13 or later)

  2. Open BajoLasRaices, inside the folder.

macOS

Not available yet. It is planned for an upcoming beta.

Every download includes a README (in Spanish) with the steps, the controls and where your save is stored.

Controls

Keyboard or gamepad

Every key can be changed in Configuración → Controles.

With a gamepad: A jumps, X attacks, Y shoots, B casts the Gust, RT is the Wind Step, LT and the left stick click cast the spells, the right stick click blocks, LB picks a potion and RB drinks it, Select opens the inventory and Start goes back to the title.

This is a beta

The story mode is complete, but the difficulty is still being tuned and bugs may show up. Upcoming versions will be published on this page.

Wind abilities

Aren starts with the Gust and learns the rest by levelling up. In the bottom-right corner of the HUD, the ones not learned yet show the level they arrive at.

  • Level 1
    Gust (Ráfaga)Pushes enemies back and breaks cracked earth.

    Boost (Impulso)Double jump.
